Our QuickEscapes–Tibet itinerary is not at all rushed, so we can truly savor the delights on offer in Tibet’s “Golden Triangle”: the three major urban centers of Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse. In the celebrated capital city of Lhasa, the focal point of our trip, we will take our time as we wander the byways of the Barkhor bazaar and Jokhang temple; meditate with monks in the monasteries of Sera, Drepung, and Nechung; and revel in the splendid grandeur of the Potala Palace.
In Gyantse, we will see the elaborately adorned white jewel that is the Kumbum, while in Shigatse we will explore the expansive grounds of the monastery at Tashilhunpo. Indeed, all of the sites on our journey are unforgettable, must-see destinations. For a truly transcendental travel experience, try our QuickEscapes–Tibet excursion as a stand-alone adventure, or combine it with one of our other unforgettable Asian itineraries.
Moderate High-Altitude Touring
Moderate High-Altitude touring generally indicates that the majority of the tour spends time above 10,000 feet, and that participants must stay on their feet for 3-5 hours a day in order to partake in all tour activities. This itinerary relies on two long (5-7 hours) days of driving on rough mountain roads. Because of the nature of mountain roads, which are subject to closures due to landslides, it may be necessary to revise our schedule before or during the trip. (In that event, we will keep all travelers advised to the latest information we obtain.) Bathroom facilities during these long drives are frequently nonexistent and limit your privacy to a nearby tree or rock. Anyone who would be uncomfortable in such a situation should not consider this trip.
High Altitude: Please note that we will reach altitudes of more than 16,000 feet as we drive over high passes, with sleeping elevations consistently above 11,500 feet. This tour is subject to mountain weather (snowfall, storms, ice, rain, wind) and other mountain hazards. Circumstance may mean that some days could be long and arduous for some people.
Anyone with a history of medical problems, particularly cardiac or respiratory, should consult a doctor before considering this tour. A release of liability and a medical certificate, signed by a physician, will be required from all participants.
