Cambodia

With an otherworldly tranquility and a mysterious setting that evokes the inspiring adventurers of yore, Angkor Wat ranks high on many a bucket list. Of course, Angkor Wat and the many other exquisite temples that dot the Cambodian landscape are the country’s most renowned and visited sites; but dig deeper, and this effervescent land and its friendly people reveal a panoply of intriguing experiences. Though it bears a difficult history, Cambodia is seeking new beginnings and welcoming the traveler with open arms once more. Here you can ply the exotic waters of the Mekong; explore the historic capital of Phnom Penh; be touched by the somber memorials to the war years and the reign of the Khmer Rouge; experience the wonders of the jungle, replete with floating villages; or let the cares of hectic modern life slip away in the bucolic (by Asian standards, at least) coastal town of Sihanoukville. Cambodia is a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty…and largely still off the beaten path.

  • When Andrea Ross started Journeys Within in 2003, she was told they had to choose: be a travel agent based in the US, or be a ground operator based in Southeast Asia. Rather than be limited by convention, Journeys Within became both, earning the company the reputation it has today of offering guests seamless, customized trips. Not only does Journeys Within offer incredible Southeast Asia tours to places such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Luang Prabang, Hanoi, Hue, Mandalay, Bagan, Angkor Wat and more, they also offer unique opportunities to leave these tourist hubs and get out into the countryside for an authentic experience to get to know the cultures and the people.

  • Journeys Within specializes in what it calls Active Philanthropy: the idea that when travelers visit a country or community, their visit should have a tangible positive impact. Having been described by Condé Nast Traveler as “pioneers in philanthropic travel,” JW believes in not just empowering local people to better their own lives, but empowering travelers to help give them that chance. This is why JW started a non-profit “Journeys Within Our Community” in 2005. JWOC develops projects in Southeast Asia that reduce poverty levels, increase educational and economic opportunities, and empower recipients and supporters, inspiring ongoing social change. The Journeys Within Tour Company and the JWOC non-profit work together to ensure that their impact in local communities is positive and sustainable. JW regularly promotes and encourages guests to visit the nonprofit and experience the projects. Additionally, the tour company promotes and recommends socially conscious hotels, tours, and restaurants that give back to their local communities.

The people behind Journeys

Andrea Ross

Founder & CEO
journeys-staff-AndreaRossAndrea grew up in England listening to stories of colonial Africa and the Far East. At the age of eight she took her first solo trip to Australia to visit her aunt and she hasn’t stopped traveling since.  In 2003 Andrea moved with her business partner Brandon to Cambodia where they started Journeys Within Tour Company and Boutique Hotel.  Andrea has been on the Wendy Perrin Travel Specialist List for the last six years and takes her role as a regional expert seriously. She splits her time between the US and Southeast Asia and travels extensively to make sure the guides, drivers and hotels used by Journeys Within are up to standard. She loves to find new and unique trips, hotels and experiences for her guests.  When in the US Andrea continues to travel, speaking at clubs and schools, promoting Philanthropic Travel and fundraising for JWOC.

Narla Phay

Director, Customer Service
journeys-staff-NarlaNarla grew up in Banteay Mean Chey province, 90 miles from Siem Reap. The oldest in his family, he came to Siem Reap to study tourism and hospitality management at Build Bright University. When Brandon had to visit the tourism police to help some guests who had lost their tickets, he met Narla and immediately invited him to come and work at Journeys Within. After a stint as the hotel’s front desk manager, Narla applied for a JWOC scholarship and was admitted to the program.  A tireless advocate for helping the Cambodian people, Narla graduated from university and now works for both JWOC and the tour company. He labors around the clock and still manages to always be smiling. Narla has a great heart and truly enjoys life.

Naida Dizdarevic

Manager & Tour Consultant
journeys-staff-Naid_13ED02BFor most of Naida’s adult life, she dreamt about traveling the world—a dream that came true when she got the opportunity to move to Argentina for six months in 2006. Returning to her home in Sweden, Naida realized that she wanted to experience more so she made a big move to Australia for her first job in the travel industry, consulting on country-wide tours. Another one of Naida’s big dreams came true last year when she took the opportunity to work for an NGO in Siem Reap. Having fallen in love with Cambodia, she is now thrilled to help other people discover the region’s beauty.

Sina Kham

journeys-staff-SinaKhamTour Guide
Sina hails from Banteay Meanchhey Province and is one of Journeys Within’s original guides. He decided to go into the profession after having the opportunity to chat with members of the UN in 1992, asking them a great many questions and practicing his English. He likes to hear about other cultures and likes finding out about other people. He has been guiding for almost 12 years, before that working as a moto driver, a hotel receptionist, and an English teacher. He also harbors a hidden talent as a photographer and is particularly good at taking his clients to  great locations for the perfect “photo-op.”

Saravy Sar

Tour Guide
journey-staff-SaravySaravy grew up in Battambang, Cambodia’s second largest city, and he is the youngest of three brothers. He has always been proud of Cambodia and it’s culture so he moved to Siem Reap to study tourism and hospitality where he has now been a tour guide for seven years. Passionate about his job, Saravy loves travelling and making new friends.

Santhou Sen

journey-staff-SanthouTour Guide
Soon after graduating from the University of Phnom Penh in 2004, Santhou joined the tourism industry.  In 2005 he moved to Siem Reap in search of a better job and found his niche as a tour guide and has been working with Journeys Within since 2007.  He comes from a fairly large family and a humble background and believes it important to show clients the “real Cambodia” including how hard the locals work in an effort to better their lives.  He is very proud to show visitors his country and explain the long history of Cambodia.  He was an English teacher before becoming a guide and enjoys taking our guests to meet locals off the beaten track.
